Phil,

Thank you and it definitely is and I don't mind at all if you would like to put the photos on your web page.

Nicole,

 THAT'S GREAT! Congratulations.

You should be very careful as you proceed. The results have a way of "having their way with you" and life will never be the same. I'll bet your head is spinning with ideas right now. If you need any other pointers let me know. I'd be happy to help.

Do you mind if I put your photos and our dialogue up on my web page?

Mr. Hamling,

I just finished my crystalline piece today.  It turned out surprisingly well compared to my expectations especially since it was my first crystalline piece ever.  Attached to this email are several photos of my piece.  I am also planning to do more crystalline firing because I liked it so much.

Thank you!

Nicole

Mr. Hamling,

Yes, I am that Nicole Teplitz.  I am very new to the crystalline glaze process.   I am a ceramic minor at Jacksonville University and I am a junior so I have only been dealing with ceramics for about 2 1/2 years.  I don't have pictures of any work that involves crystalline glazing since this will be my first time so a basic recipe is just what I need.  I also just wrote a research paper on crystalline glazing and I believe that Diane Creber was one of my sources.  If you would like to see a few pictures of my work I can get some for you also I can definitely take pictures of my finished crystalline pieces if you would like.

Thank you so much for your time and response.

Nicole

Nicole,

I am sorry for the delayed reply. It seems there is just not enough of me to go around these days.

It is nice to make your acquaintance. Are you this Nicole Teplitz? http://www.judolphins.com/volleyball/roster/214/3137/

Tell me a little about your involvement with crystalline glazes. Are you just getting started or do you have some experience? Can you send any photos of your work? Do you participate in the Crystalline Glaze Forum? http://s3.excoboard.com/crystal  I highly recommend it. Have you read some the more popular books out there such as those by Diane Creber, Peter Illsley and Jon Price?

I've found it's just not as easy as "hey….give me a recipe." All clays and different lots of raw materials give different results. You need to be in a position to see what is happening in your results, recognize the root causes and make adjustments to recipes to accommodate your exact clay and raw materials.

I've made a lot of different blue glazes over the last few years. Is there anything in particular you are thinking of?

If you are new to it all maybe you should start with a simple blue glaze such as 50% 3110, 25% zinc and 25% silica with 1% cobalt carbonate and get too know it inside and out through many tests. Learn the effects of firing and hold temperatures, glaze thickness as well as variations in zinc and frit content,

I hope some of this has helped you and look forward to a response.

Hello Mr. Hamling,

I am a ceramic student at Jacksonville University and I was looking at your website especially admiring your crystalline glazes.  I was wondering if you would be willing to give me the recipe for your blue crystalline glaze.  I would really appreciate it.

Thank you so much,

Nicole
