Hi Phil, another easy-to-respond to inquiry.
There's nothing to it.  Just a long, probably five-hour soak, followed by a drop or rise in temperature of perhaps 50 degrees, and another soak of maybe two hours at the new temperature.  Halos are easy.  Some glaze colorants do it better than others.  Jon and Leroy Price cover it briefly in their book, and I'm sure the other books cover it too.  Growth rings are another name for the same thing.
A slow cooling kiln will produce an outside-edge halo when the crystal-growing cycle is complete without your even trying.
By the way, that Yi-Hyun Jo vase was about 10" tall, and had a price somewhere around $3,500.

William,
Another thing to add to your list......
Do you know what Yi-Hyun Jo does to get this effect

(broad crystals with a huge halo)?

Hi Phil:
I still owe you a reply to your last message.  I have been inundated with
correspondence, most of which requires involved responses, as will your
previous message to me.  Since this is an easy one to answer, I will answer
it out of order.
When I set up the board, I thought that I entered the correct time stamp.  I
just checked, and the time stamp was 12 hours off, so I corrected it.
Thanks for the heads up.  We shall see if the new time setting holds.  The
little yellow "NEW!" flags after a new post are supposed to disappear at
midnight.
The time stamp is set to Texas time, CST.
